The National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is a public medical institution and Institute of National Importance in Bengaluru, specializing in mental health, neurosciences, psychiatry, neurology, clinical psychology, and related disciplines. It is nationally and internationally recognized for patient care, education, research, and training in the fields of mental health and brain sciences. NIMHANS integrates clinical care with cutting-edge research, community outreach, and advanced training programs.
Originally formed by the merging of the Government Mental Hospital and the All India Institute of Mental Health, it became an autonomous institute in 1974, was granted Deemed University status in 1994, and was designated an Institute of National Importance by Parliament under the NIMHANS Act, 2012.
NIMHANS also runs comprehensive patient care services, offering inpatient, outpatient, emergency care, specialized clinics, rehabilitation, and community mental health services. Its research spans neuroscience, clinical psychiatry, neurobiology, and public mental health.
